After years of relative neglect, Greece is now looking to golf to bolster
year-round tourism and entice more upscale travelers to the ancient land of
Hellas. Old courses are getting renovated and new courses are planned. Can
Greece, with more sunny days than Spain or Portugal, finally make it onto
the world golfing map?

What country has more days of sunshine than Spain, but fewer golf courses
than your average-sized modern American city?
If you answered "Greece", you're well on your way to understanding why the
land that hosted the 2004 Summer Olympic Games is looking forward to hosting
tens of thousands of golf tourists in coming years.
But first, there's the little matter of the courses.
At present, Greece has a handful of courses with plans for another dozen
underway |

Opened in July of 2003, this Bob Hunt-designed golf course is about
fourteen miles east of the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport at
Heraklion on the E75 New National Road. A German and English-speaking golf
pro is on site, and the clubhouse offers a bar and restaurant. Developed by
a group of local hoteliers, the course is said to be meticulously maintained
and aims to please the experienced international golfer. It is an
exceptionally beautiful course, providing vistas of the rugged mountains of
Crete on the back nine, and then shifting to views of the deep blue Aegean
sea. |
