Leopard Creek Country Club
Around the fairways at Leopard Creek Country Club you'll spot baboons,
armies of monkeys, impala, even wandering giraffes. From the river's-edge
green of the par-five thirteenth, you might look down on a pod of
hippopotamuses or a herd of elephants. Sound more like Wild Kingdom than a
serious place to play the game? It's actually not. Golf at Leopard Creek is
the nearest Africa comes to the elegance and mannered calm of Augusta
National, but it also magically finds a way of coexisting with the bushveld
(tropical savanna) that it has borrowed from the local fauna. Bent-grass
greens and 1,200 sprinkler heads capable of pumping 800,000 gallons of water
a day mean that Leopard Creek isn't exactly a natural ecosystem.
Nevertheless, the course that's been created here is manicured to perfection
and is truly superb. The view from the elevated tee at the long fifteenth is
one to be savored. And for fans of the seventeenth at Kiawah Island's Ocean
course, Leopard Creek's par-three sixteenth, a 208-yard carry over water to
a tight green, awaits.
Situated near Malelane in the heart of Mpumalanga, on the southern border
of the Kruger National Park, Leopard Creek presents a rare opportunity to
own an outstanding bushveld retreat. The 360 hectare development is bordered
to the north and the west by the picturesque Crocodile River and the Kruger
National Park. Typical bushveld koppies overlook the course from the east,
providing an ideal backdrop for a magnificent course.
Access: Leopard Creek is a mere four-hour drive from
Johannesburg
or 40 minutes by plane, far away enough to provide total relaxation, yet
close enough to enjoy easy access.
Perfect Climate: Malelane, with its temperate climate, offers
year-round attractions – comfort, convenience and informal elegance. The
winter season is an especially enjoyable time in Malelane with easy
game-viewing and bird-watching, and ideal weather for golf. |
